A figure of a witch in the spirit of classic pin-up artwork, a Halloween subject in 1:35 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The drawn girls of calendars and advertising posters became part of wartime iconography the moment bomber crews started transferring them onto the noses of their machines. Nose art spread faster than any order and its sources came from painters of the Gil Elvgren or Alberto Vargas kind. This tradition lives on in modeling to this day and holds even where it has nothing to do with period equipment.
The witch subject is one of the seasonal pieces that figure makers prepare for the autumn. The pointed hat, the broom and the playful pose of the body aim more at humor than at history, so the figure does not belong in a wartime scene but on a shelf, in a display case or in a holiday photograph.
In 1:35 the figure is around fifty millimeters tall and the whole impression stands or falls with the skin. Starting with a mid flesh tone is advisable, handling the shadows with a thin glaze in the places under the chin and in the armpits and placing the highlights only on the forehead, the cheekbones and the collarbones. At this size the eyes are suggested with a line rather than drawn with a pupil.
A seasonal figure gains when it is given a base of its own with a simple subject: a couple of pumpkins, a plank floor, a broom leaning against something. In color it has proved best to keep to a limited palette, that is orange, black and one cool accessory, because variety would break a small piece up. An odd number of pumpkins tends to be better and each one will take a different shade of orange.
