An injection-molded plastic kit of the British Type 23 frigate in 1:350 scale from Trumpeter. The subject is a particular ship with the pennant number F237, carrying the name Westminster. In the Royal Navy the class is also known as the Duke class, because all the ships carry the names of British ducal titles.
The Type 23 was created as a specialized anti-submarine frigate for work in the North Atlantic. The whole design is subordinated to a single requirement, the lowest possible radiated noise, so that the ship can work effectively with a towed array sonar. That is where the combined propulsion comes from: electric motors fed by diesel generators handle quiet patrol cruising and the gas turbines are brought in only when high speed is needed. The sides of the hull are sloped and the superstructure is simplified in shape to reduce the radar signature. At the stern is a helicopter deck with a hangar. Ships of this class have been through several modernization programs during their service, so their appearance has changed noticeably over time.
Because the name does not fix the year of the fit, choose the period you want to build the model to and stick to period photographs of one particular appearance of the ship. Lay the Royal Navy gray on with an airbrush in thin coats and grade the shade, otherwise the side looks flat. Fill the angled surfaces of the superstructure carefully, as the sharp edges are essential to the look of the ship. Fit the railings and the antennas at the end.
