The blacksmith belongs among the civilian figures that give a scene a story faster than another soldier in uniform would. Royal Model offers this subject in two sizes and this is the smaller of them, that is 1:48 scale. The casting is made in polyurethane resin and arrives without paint and without a base.
The village smithy was still a matter of course in any community in the first half of the twentieth century. The blacksmith shod horses and repaired plows, wheel rims and locks, and in times of mobilization he worked for the army teams. That is exactly why the figure also fits a military scene: a field workshop, a horse team or the ruins of a village the front has only just passed through. Even in the 1940s draft animals handled the greater part of the supply work of European armies.
In 1:48 scale an adult figure stands roughly three and a half centimeters tall, so detail is suggested rather than painted. A darker base, a lighter dry brush on the raised areas and only discreet shading in the folds all prove their worth. Leave the apron and the leather parts matte, and polish the metal tools to a sharp highlight instead. Wash the mold release residue off the casting beforehand and glue the joints with cyanoacrylate glue.
