A plastic kit of the British interceptor English Electric Lightning F.6 in 1:48 scale from Airfix. The 153-part package is based on a newer Airfix tooling and offers three color schemes of RAF aircraft. The kit does not include photo-etch or masks. The markings include aircraft of No. 5 Squadron (Binbrook, 1977), No. 56 Squadron, and an RAF museum exhibit.
The Lightning was the only purely British production fighter capable of speeds over Mach 2. Its unmistakable feature was the stacked arrangement of two Rolls-Royce Avon engines and a heavily swept wing. It excelled above all in steep climb and climb rate, which suited it as a fast interceptor for catching bombers. The F.6 version was a late, performance-improved standard with a larger fuel capacity and served with the RAF well into the 1980s.
We recommend working with thin liquid cement for plastic and test-fitting the fuselage, which houses a bulky engine section on the Lightning, before gluing. Since the package does not include masks, prepare your own masking tape for the cockpit glazing. Many F.6 aircraft carried a bare-metal finish or a gray-green camouflage — for the metal finish, a good primer and metallic paints applied in varying shades to distinguish panels pay off. Highlight the panel lines with a light wash.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints, and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
