About product

Westland Wessex - Wipers, 1:48 (Quickboost / Aires)

A resin detail set for improving a model of the British Westland Wessex helicopter in 1:48 scale. This is not a kit - you will find no fuselage, rotor or decals in the package. What it holds are the windshield wipers themselves, which replace the parts from the base kit. The set is intended for the Italeri and Academy kits.

Why it pays off to change the wipers

A wiper is a long, flat and extremely thin element. Injected plastic cannot manage such a thickness, so the part from the kit tends to be thick and blunt, or is missing from the box altogether. And yet it sits right on the windshield, on the most closely watched spot of the whole model: a disproportionately heavy wiper gives away at once that you are looking at a model, not at a machine. Resin holds a thin, sharp profile, so a part this small has a visual effect out of all proportion to it. On a helicopter that goes double, because the Wessex has extensive cockpit glazing and the wipers show up a great deal on it.

The real subject

The Westland Wessex is a British helicopter that grew out of a licensed development of the American Sikorsky H-34. The key change was the replacement of the piston engine by turbine power, which made the Wessex the first British production helicopter with a gas turbine. With the Royal Navy it served as the navy's first purpose-built antisubmarine machine, and with the RAF in transport, support and rescue roles.

Usage tips

Resin is not bonded with cement for polystyrene, which has no effect on it whatsoever. Use super glue (cyanoacrylate), or a two-part epoxy. Cut the parts off the casting block carefully with a fine saw; with wipers this thin, go about it with particular care, because they break easily. Before painting, wash the parts in lukewarm water with dish soap, because otherwise residues of mold release agent will keep the paint from adhering. Always sand wet: resin dust is harmful to health and must not be inhaled. Attach the wipers at the very end of the build, after varnishing, because they are tiny and only too happy to snap off while the model is being handled.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building the Wessex from Italeri or Academy
  • those who want the greatest effect from the smallest part
  • anyone interested in British helicopter technology
  • modelers used to working with resin and super glue

This is a detail accessory, not a model. The base kit, glue, paints and other accessories are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is a detail accessory - the windshield wipers alone. The base Westland Wessex kit (Italeri or Academy) has to be bought separately.

Because it sits right on the windshield, that is on the most visible spot of the model. A plastic wiper from the kit tends to be thick and blunt; a resin one has a realistically thin profile and the difference shows at first glance.

Cement for polystyrene does not work, so use super glue or epoxy. Cut the parts off the casting block, wash the mold release agent off them and sand exclusively wet, because the dust is harmful to health.

At the end of the build, after varnishing and once the paints have dried. They are very small and snap off easily while the model is handled further.
