An injection-molded plastic kit of the light helicopter of the Bell 47 family in 1:72 scale from Italeri. The AH-1 designation in the name belongs to the British army version Sioux AH Mk.1, not to the AH-1 Cobra attack helicopter. The abbreviation AB 47 denotes the machines built under license in Italy.
The Bell 47 is a two to three seat light helicopter with a piston engine that became one of the first mass-produced machines of its kind. You will recognize it at first glance: the cabin has the shape of a glazed bubble, the tail boom is an open lattice and the machine sits on skids rather than wheels. It carries a two-blade main rotor with a stabilizer bar. Helicopters of this family served for decades in training, reconnaissance and casualty evacuation, in Britain under the name Sioux and in Italy under the designation AB 47.
The clear cabin and the latticework take the most work. Cut the bubble from the sprue carefully, glue it with cement intended for clear parts and mask the whole of it before spraying. The thin lattice sections of the tail boom break easily, so leave them on the sprue as long as possible and sand the remaining stub only lightly after cutting. The engine and tanks are exposed on the real machine, so it is worth spending time bringing them out.
A small kit for the modeler who likes machines with exposed structure and does not want to build for a whole week. Because of the small parts and the clear cabin it is not quite the one for a first model ever.
The box holds plastic parts, decals and instructions. Paints, glue and varnishes are not included, unless stated otherwise.
