The nickname Tommy has gone with the British soldier since the nineteenth century. The figure of a British infantryman in the small format from the Italian brand Royal Model brings it into 1:72 scale as a resin accessory to vehicles, guns and smaller settings.
The name comes from the specimen forms of the British army, where Tommy Atkins appeared as the example of a completed name. The soldiers adopted the designation, and during both world wars it became the ordinary name for the plain infantryman. His typical look came from the flat steel helmet, whose broad rim was meant to protect against splinters falling from above, from the blouse and trousers of coarse wool and from the belt set of woven webbing, which was kept up with blanco. In this dress the British infantry went through France, the desert and Italy.
With a figure over two centimeters tall it pays to work with contrast: apply the khaki in two tones, the darker one into the folds and the lighter one onto the shoulders and the knees. The helmet will take a hint of gray-green so that it separates from the uniform. Cut the base off only once the painting is finished, so that you have something to hold the figure by. The webbing will take a brown a shade darker so that it separates from the blouse.
