About product

Italian CB class midget submarines in 1:72 scale

A kit of the Italian CB class midget submarines in 1:72 scale. Mikromir has long devoted itself to exactly such subjects - small, technically interesting vessels and aircraft that do not turn up in the ordinary ranges. The name is in the plural, which with sets of small vessels often means more than one hull in a package, but the exact contents are not stated here. Nor is the part count or the range of decal options.

The real subject

The CB class was an Italian series of very small submarines intended for harbor defense and for operations in enclosed waters. They were vessels a few meters long with a crew of several men, a simple powerplant and armament carried outside the hull. Their small draft and dimensions let them move in places an ordinary submarine could not reach, in exchange for very limited range and minimal comfort for the crew. For a modeler the CB class is attractive because the whole hull is compact even in 1:72 scale and yet has pronounced features: the low conning position, the outlines of the hatches, the mounts for the external armament and the propeller with its guard.

Building and painting tips

A small vessel in 1:72 puts the emphasis on clean joints - run the longitudinal hull joint carefully and fill it, because on a smooth rounded shape it is otherwise conspicuous. Clean the small parts of the conning position and the armament with a scalpel, and on very thin parts consider replacing them with stretched sprue or wire. Apply a uniform base coat before painting; on ship models it works well to divide the hull with masking tape into a lower and an upper part along the waterline before painting. Keep the weathering restrained - on a vessel that spent most of its time in the water, fine vertical rust streaks and light deposits on the lower part of the hull look more convincing than pronounced dry highlighting of the edges. The model looks good on a simple stand or in a small water scene.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of submarines and small vessels in 1:72 scale.
  • Anyone interested in Italian naval technology of the Second World War.
  • Modelers looking for a quicker project with an unusual subject.
  • Builders of small water dioramas.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The name is in the plural, which with sets of small vessels often means more than one piece, but the exact contents are not stated here. Check them on the packaging.

They were very small Italian submersibles intended for harbor defense and for operations in enclosed waters, with a crew of several men and armament carried outside the hull.

The material make-up and any extras such as photo-etch or resin parts are not stated here. With smaller specialist brands the engineering tends to differ from mass-produced kits, so expect to spend more care on cleaning up the parts.

A simple stand or a small water scene with a surface suggest themselves. The compact dimensions also allow a version with the hull partly submerged, where only the conning position is visible.
