The collector figure of a girl in flying kit from Royal Model recalls the drawn genre that decorated the noses of bombers during the war. The 75 mm figure is this brand's established way of giving the size of a figure; it is not a scale. The resin casting is meant to be assembled and painted with care.
The genre grew up in American magazines of the 1930s and during the war it moved onto the metal of aircraft. Crews had girl figures painted on the nose after calendar drawings, usually together with the name of the machine. It was an ornament, a talisman and a way of giving the machine a face the men would remember, all at once. The motif survived the war, became part of popular culture, and it is through figures in this spirit that it comes back to modeling.
At a size of 75 mm every transition shows, and skin therefore needs more than a single shade: a base, a warmer tone on the cheeks and the knuckles, a cooler shadow under the chin. Oil paints suit this approach better than fast-drying ones, because they can be blended for a long time. A leather jacket, by contrast, is well served by a slightly glossy final coat so that it is set apart from cloth. Leave the hair until last, because it overlaps the outline of the face.
