Injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet fighter biplane Polikarpov I-15bis in 1:72 scale from the Ukrainian manufacturer ICM. The model has fine surface engraving, well-worked small parts and clear parts for the glazing. As with every biplane, the build includes rigging, that is the bracing wires between the wings, which give the model a faithful look. Glue and paints are not included in the package.
The I-15bis was an improved version of the successful Soviet fighter biplane Polikarpov I-15. Compared with its predecessor it received a conventional straight upper wing instead of the cranked gull wing, for better pilot visibility, along with a strengthened airframe. Series production ran from 1937. The machine proved itself in the fighting at the Khalkhin Gol river against Japan, in the Spanish Civil War and in the first months of the Great Patriotic War, where it served as a fighter and as a ground-attack aircraft in support of ground units. Despite growing obsolescence it stayed in use for a long time thanks to its agility and toughness.
The key to a successful biplane build is the accurate seating of the upper wing on its struts; it pays to glue them only once the lower joints have set. Make the rigging from thin filament or rigging material only after painting. A base coat evens the surface out, apply the camouflage with an airbrush and bring out the fabric surfaces with a fine wash. A matte varnish underlines the period look.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
