A set of cork strips for building a bed under track in TT gauge and for narrow gauge in H0. The box contains six strips of sixty centimeters each, three point six meters in total, and the finish is light.

Narrow gauge has a look of its own

A narrow-gauge line was never built as generously as a main line. The bed tended to be shallower, narrower and often only makeshift, with grass growing up between the ties. The profile for this gauge matches that, which is exactly why it pays not to use a bed from a main line: a wide permanent way would turn a forest light railway into a trunk route.

How to lay the strips

• Draw the route on the baseboard and glue the strips along the line
• Glue with PVA glue and weigh them down until dry
• On curves, nick the strip slightly on the outside
• Sand the joints flat
• On a narrow-gauge line leave the bed deliberately imperfect

With narrow gauge it pays to let part of the bed go to weeds with grasses once the ballast is down, because that detail is exactly what sets a light railway apart from a main line. At turnouts and loading areas the strips are made up with a cork sheet cut as needed, because the ready-made shape does not suit there. Before you cover the bed with ballast, run the train you count on in ordinary operation over the line.
