The base, roughly four centimeters along the edge, carries a piece of wooden wall and a bucket set down beside it. The casting in polyurethane resin is cut so as to serve figures in 1:35 as well as slightly larger figures in 1:32; in a rural corner the difference between the two scales plays no part. The base is made by the Italian brand Royal Model.
A boarded wall and a bucket set down suggest a farm building or the back of a yard. A background like that will carry a whole range of subjects: a resting soldier, a civilian in wartime, but also a figure with no military context at all. A small area forces you to show restraint, which does vignettes good, because they tell their story in a single scene. Around the wall you can also add soil or dry grass of your own, and the scene grows past the edge of the casting without any strain.
Boards look best when a dark undercoat gets under the paint and a lighter tone is then applied with a dry brush along the grain. A glaze that runs into the grooves brings out the pattern of the growth rings. Take the bucket down into a metallic shade with a hint of rust at the bottom and complete the soil around it with a fine pigment. It is assembled with cyanoacrylate and the surface calls for a filler primer.
