A cable drum is one of those things that do more on a diorama than another figure would. It belongs at a building site, at a railroad station, with a repair crew and on a field telephone line; it can be leaned against a wall, laid on its side in the mud or lashed to the cargo bed of a truck. At the same time it hints to the viewer at once what is going on in the scene and why these people are there.

Cut the excess material off with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the rest back, so that the surface detail is preserved. The part is not polystyrene and ordinary cement for plastic has no effect on it; use cyanoacrylate glue. Wash and degrease it before painting. The wooden end of the drum looks good when a darker pattern of growth rings is laid under the base tone and the edges are then lightened gently; after that a dirty deposit at ground level is enough and the drum looks as if it had really been rolled around a building site. Anyone who wants a cable on the drum winds on thin wire or thread painted the color of the conductor, turn beside turn.
