A hydrant is so taken for granted in a street that nobody notices it until it is missing. A drawing point for fire water was placed at regular intervals so that firefighters did not have to drag a hose across a whole block. It is precisely that regularity that is useful to the builder of a base: from the distance between two identical objects a viewer judges the length of a street even when the scene offers him no other clue.
Inside you will find two separate castings and a small photo-etched sheet to go with them. The number is not accidental. A single post stays a curiosity, whereas a pair set at a distance creates a line along which the eye travels from the foreground to the back. The photo-etched sheet covers what a casting cannot carry, that is, the thin plates, the flat flanges and the little chains of the caps, whose thickness in resin would come out absurdly massive.
First wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water, so that the mold release agent disappears; without that the paint holds poorly. Cut the pour lugs off with a saw, not with nippers, because resin on a thin neck is apt to crack. Cast iron gets rubbed in service against the curb and the shoes of passers-by, so a saturated base coat suits worn edges and rust drawn from the edges inwards.
The best place is where the sidewalk meets the roadway, ideally set out a little in front of the facade, because that is where it stood in reality too. If you are building a ruin or a scene after a hit, try leaving one piece upright and the other uprooted along with a piece of the curb; the contrast between the whole and the wreck will say more about the event than a broken wall. The set suits columns of vehicles, street scenes and also works as an addition to groups of figures of the same size.
