This set, cast in plaster, brings portable concrete blocks of the kind used to close roads and to protect checkpoints. Royal Model makes them specifically in plaster, and with this item that is important information, because the material behaves differently from resin.
The casts are more brittle and absorbent. They will not take dry filing under heavy pressure, but they are easy to work with a rasp or to break deliberately, giving a damaged block with the reinforcement exposed. They are joined with PVA glue, which soaks into the surface, not with cyanoacrylate. A primer is essential before painting, otherwise the shade disappears into the material and the result goes patchy.
Barriers of this type belong to the scenery of the Middle East from the 1980s to the present. They stand at the entrances to compounds, divide the lanes ahead of a check and cover guard posts. In a scene they give a clear time frame and at the same time serve as a visual screen that breaks up the monotonous surface of a base. Set at an angle one behind another they also create the kind of chicane that is really built at checkpoints, and the scene gains its action at once.
