The opening one of the two metal sets that the Italian firm Royal Model offers for a kit of the early version of the German heavy tank in 1:48 scale. In the smaller scale the thickness of the plastic shows up even more strongly than in 1:35, so thin fenders, grilles over the engine, tool brackets and clips bring an immediately visible difference. The following part of the series is sold as a separate item. The target kit is Tamiya.
Machines from the first production batches differ from the later ones at first glance: a cylindrical turret cupola with vision slits, rubber-tired road wheels, the side boxes of the air filters and the preparation for fording flooded stretches. The 88 mm gun was derived from an anti-aircraft gun and on the battlefields of the day it outranged anything that could answer it. The vehicles first went into action in the autumn of 1942 near Leningrad, where boggy ground betrayed them sooner than the enemy did, and yet the reputation of an unbeatable machine began to spread at once.
A small scale forgives fewer mistakes, so try the parts dry on the plastic first and only then glue them. The fenders can be thinned right to the edge and damaged with tweezers, which gives the model the wear of service. A primer for metal is a necessity here too.
The shipment holds metal parts only; everything else needed to finish the build is obtained separately.
