The sheet covers Supermarine Spitfire Mk.V machines as they were flown during the Second World War by the squadrons made up of Czechoslovak airmen in the Royal Air Force. The Mk.V Spitfire was the pivotal type for No. 310, No. 312 and No. 313 Squadron: on it the units moved from defensive patrols over the islands to bomber escort and to the sweeps over occupied France that were known in the slang of the day as Circus and Rhubarb. Alongside the British roundels, the fuselages carried squadron letters, the personal marks of the pilots and the emblems the airmen had brought with them from their earlier service in France.
It is meant for a kit in 1:72 scale from any maker. The differences between the Mk.V subvariants concern mainly the wing armament and the shape of the air filter under the nose, so before you start applying the decals it is worth comparing the machine you have chosen with the scheme on the box. The subjects are printed in register and carry both the national insignia and the small technical stencils.
The surface underneath must be glossy and smooth, otherwise air gets trapped under the film and the subject silvers. Leave the piece you have cut out in lukewarm water only until it starts to slide on the paper, lay it on a dampened spot and draw the excess water off with the edge of a paper towel. On rivets and engraved panel lines a setting solution helps, drawing the film down onto the surface. Once everything has dried, a final coat of flat or semigloss varnish evens out the difference in sheen across the airframe and hides the edges of the film at the same time.
