This set of plastic figures in 1:72 scale contains six elephants in two poses, six drivers and twelve fighters for the towers on the animals' backs, of which six are spearmen and six standard bearers. Altogether that is eighteen figures in four poses and six animals. It is supplied unpainted and unassembled.
War elephants were a weapon that worked above all on morale. Horses that did not know the smell of an elephant shied, and close infantry opened its ranks before them; but a wounded elephant was unpredictable and more than once turned on its own side. Carthage used them throughout the period of the Punic wars, and the best known instance is Hannibal's crossing of the Alps with a herd of which only part reached Italy. The tower on the back carried one or two fighters and served as a raised firing position.
Paint the elephant before you attach the tower and the crew to it; afterwards you cannot reach the back. Elephant skin is not a flat gray: make the base a mid gray, draw a dark glaze into the wrinkles and go over the edges with a dry brush in a lighter tone. The tower and the harness will take richer colors and ornament, and it was precisely those that gave the elephants their display. Seat the figures in the tower at the very end.
The figures are supplied unpainted and unassembled. Paints, glue and bases are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
