On a model a gloss varnish is a working layer, not just decoration. A smooth gloss surface is the only ground on which a decal settles over its whole area. On a matte coat, microscopic voids are left between the decal and the paint, and they show up as a pale veil around the motif, which is then hard to get rid of afterwards. The gloss layer also protects the paint underneath, so you can work over it with washes and oil paints without worry.
Shake the bottle thoroughly before use. Apply the varnish in thin coats and let the surface dry in between; one heavy coat runs into the recesses, clogs the surface relief and dries unevenly. Choose the thinning and the spraying pressure according to the manufacturer's instructions. Rinse your tools with water right after work, while the varnish is still fresh, as it is no longer so easy once it has dried. The proven sequence goes: varnish the base color with gloss, apply the decals once it is dry, do the washes and finally even out the surface with a matte or satin varnish, depending on how the model is meant to look.
For modelers who work with decals and washes, and for anyone who needs a bigger supply of varnish than a small bottle holds. Paints, thinner and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
