About product

Which model the set is intended for

A masking set for a model of the heavy transport helicopter CH-47 Chinook in 1:48 scale, in the CH-47A and CH-47D versions. According to the name it is tied to the Hobby Boss kits numbered 81772 and 81773, so the shape of the masks matches the glazing and the wheels from those particular molds. The Chinook is a machine with a pair of main rotors arranged in tandem, without a tail rotor, with wheeled landing gear and a rear loading ramp.

Why double-sided masking

The glazing of the Chinook is extensive: a glazed pilot's cockpit and windows in the sides of the fuselage. The glazing frames are often a different shade on the inside than on the outside, and because you can see into the cockpit, any discrepancy is easy to spot. Double-sided masks therefore cover the clear part from the outside and from the inside, so the frames come out sharp on both sides and the glazed area is left free of paint residue. The wheel masks separate the outline of the hub from the tire and the boundary between them stays even without you having to draw it with a brush.

How to apply the masks

  • Wash the clear part before applying and let it dry thoroughly; a mask will not hold on a greasy surface.
  • Apply the mask before spraying and press the edges down carefully with a blunt tip so that paint does not run under them.
  • Apply the paint in thin coats; a heavy coat raises the risk of running as well as of tearing the edge.
  • Remove the mask soon after the paint has dried, with the tip of a knife or with tweezers, and at an angle rather than straight up.
  • The extent of the masked parts and the assignment of the individual pieces are given by the manufacturer of the set in the enclosed instructions.

Terms of supply

FAQ

The name gives the Hobby Boss kits 81772 and 81773 in 1:48 scale. On models from other makers or in another scale the shape of the masks need not match.

The masks are prepared for the glazing from the outside and from the inside. The frames therefore come out sharp on both sides, which is clearly visible on the glazed cockpit of the Chinook.

Before spraying, onto a clean and degreased part. The edges have to be pressed down so that paint does not run under them, and the mask has to come off soon after the paint has dried.

No, the set contains masking parts. The kit, paints, glue and decals are not included, unless stated otherwise.
