The Panzer IV was the most widespread German medium tank of the Second World War, and the versions E to H form the core of its production. Its running gear had eight small wheels on each side, paired into bogies sprung on leaf springs. A wheel consisted of a steel disc and a pressed-on rubber tire, which took most of the wear.
The wheels are made in the version with a destroyed rubber tire. The rubber was the most vulnerable part of a wheel: it burned off when a vehicle caught fire, tore under an overloaded suspension and wore away in the field. What was left after it was a bare steel disc with remnants of rubber at the edge, or a wheel with no tire at all. It is precisely this detail that sets a wreck or a tired machine apart from a model that looks as though it had just been taken over from the maker.
If the parts are not polystyrene, ordinary cement for plastic kits will not hold on them. Glue them with super glue or epoxy. Cut excess material and traces of manufacture away with a sharp blade a little clear of the part and sand the remainder off carefully, so that the circular shape of the disc is preserved. Wash and degrease the wheels before painting. When painting, count on bare metal being visible once the tire is gone: the running surface is therefore not black but rusted and scorched. The particular procedure for preparing the parts is given in the manufacturer's instructions.
