A road barrier lines just about every road, driveway and edge of a paved area, and on a diorama it does more than you would think. It leads the eye across the scene, separates the roadway from its surroundings and above all gives the view its scale, because its height is familiar to everybody from everyday traffic. At the same time it anchors the scene in a time and a place: a traffic jam, a checkpoint or an accident can all be built around a barrier.
