At the end of the metallic part of the Mecha Color line stand three shades that differ from the rest in principle: they do not try to imitate a particular metal but a colored finish with a metallic sheen. They carry the numbers 69.066, 69.067 and 69.068, and in the range you will find them as red, blue and green metallic paints. This one is the red of them.
The subject is painted surfaces with a silver ground under a transparent colored finish. Light passes through the finish, reflects off the metal layer and comes back tinted, so the surface changes its tone with the angle of view. On models this appearance finds a use on racing cowlings, on the hulls of personal hovercraft and on dress pieces of equipment, where the machine is meant to look more like an expensive thing than a working tool.
You will get the best results if you lay a smooth dark ground under the red metallic paint and apply the color in two or three thin passes. Every further pass deepens the tone, so the shade can be tuned by saturation rather than by mixing. It pays to work with an airbrush: on large areas a brush leaves strokes, because the metallic flakes line up differently where a stroke overlaps than they do around it.
A volume of 17 milliliters, an acrylic binder, thinned with water. The metal component sinks to the bottom, so the contents have to be stirred up properly before every use. It is advisable to protect the finished surface with varnish so that the metallic paint is not rubbed off during handling.
