Everything in motorcycle modelling is organised around 1:12. It has the most machines, the most upgrades and the most entries on competition tables, and the reason is simple arithmetic: a bike comes out between fifteen and eighteen centimetres, which is enough for a convincing engine, drilled brake discs and fine graphics while still letting a whole collection share one shelf. Subjects run from circuit racers and modern sports bikes through 1980s classics to small machines built purely for fun.
Below you will find what makes the scale worth committing to, how to pick a first machine and which upgrades take a build towards competition standard.
Because most modellers build at this scale, almost every detail set, decal sheet and metal part produced for motorcycles is made for it. That compounds: a well-known machine will usually exist both as a kit and as a set of upgrades, so you can plan a build rather than hope. The size also keeps a collection consistent, which matters more than it sounds, since mixed scales on one shelf read as a mistake.
Road bikes and 1980s classics have simpler colour schemes and are straightforward to build, which makes them the sensible first choice. Circuit machines demand clean fairing paint and careful decal work, and they are the ones that draw the eye in a case. A bike with a single-colour tank is a good training ground: one large smooth surface, nothing to mask, and a direct lesson in getting gloss right.
Kits vary in how far they go. Some supply soft rubber tyres and plated parts; others leave room for aftermarket upgrades. At this scale it pays to think of the build as a whole and choose the accessories at the same time as the kit, rather than discovering halfway through that the set you want does not exist for your machine.
If you intend to enter competitions or compare builds with others, 1:12 gives the widest field to work in, simply because the famous machines are all available here.
Larger machines are in 1:9 motorcycle kits, and the complete range of sizes is in motorcycle model kits.
