Forty-fourth scale never became a standard, and today it survives as a niche for a handful of early aviation subjects, the Fokker Dr.1 triplane above all. In practical terms the format is about half the bulk of a 1:48 model, so a finished triplane takes up next to nothing on a shelf while still reading clearly as its distinctive three-winged self. Parts counts are low and the engineering is uncomplicated, which makes these kits a painless way into First World War subjects for someone with no previous bench experience.
The choice in this ratio is narrow by its nature. If small aircraft with a long subject list are what you are after, head for collector-friendly 1:144 aircraft kits; for the broadest span of types across every era, 1:72 aircraft kits remain unmatched. Everything else sits under aircraft model kits.
